I’m finding this really helpful for working on internalising triplets and being aware of them on each part of the beat. The triplet in swing tends to fly by super fast so anything practised slow like this should help catch them.

The upper part is just a normal swing ride cymbal rhythm and the lower part is a clave 2 2 3 2 3, based on the Bembe rhythm.

Practise each part separately and then bit by bit try putting them together. If you find this hard then at first try hitting all the different parts of the beat in one hand while trying to keep the ride cymbal pattern in the other (e.g. 1st triplet, 2nd triplet, 3rd triplet etc).

I’ve been trying to play the rhythms against recordings too to get closer to applying it to real playing situations.
